Signs You’re Seeing

What ADHD Actually Looks Like At Home and At School

ADHD shows up differently at every age — and often differently at home than at school. These aren’t behavior problems or character flaws. They’re symptoms of a neurological difference in how your child’s brain manages attention, impulse control, and activity. See if any of this sounds familiar.

In Younger Children

“I can’t get him to sit down for homework for more than five minutes. The meltdowns are getting worse and I don’t know how to help.”

In Tweens & Teens

“She’s smart — everyone can see it. But nothing gets turned in, nothing is organized, and she’s starting to give up on herself.”

What ADHD Is — And Isn’t

A Neurological Difference, Not a Discipline Problem

ADHD affects how the brain manages attention, impulse control, and activity — not intelligence, character, or effort. Understanding what’s actually happening makes all the difference.

It's neurological, not behavioral

ADHD reflects differences in brain development and function — particularly in areas governing executive function. These aren't habits to be broken; they're patterns to be understood and worked with.

Three distinct presentations

Inattentive (what most people think of as "ADD"), hyperactive-impulsive, and combined — each requiring a different treatment focus. Many children have a mixed picture that shifts across settings.

It shows up differently at home vs. school

Some children hold it together all day at school and fall apart the moment they walk through the front door. Others struggle visibly in class but seem fine at home. Both are ADHD — just expressed differently.

Treatment works — for real

Research consistently shows that behavioral therapy, parent coaching, and school coordination produce meaningful, lasting results. Most families notice genuine progress within the first several weeks of treatment.

You speak with a member of our team. Tell us what's going on. We'll tell you honestly if we're the right fit. No commitment, no pressure.

Comprehensive Evaluation

We conduct a thorough intake covering symptoms, developmental history, school or work functioning, family dynamics, and any prior evaluations. For children, this first session is with the parents.

We pair you with the therapist whose background and approach best match your specific needs — not just whoever has an opening.

What Parents Say

"My son never told me 'I feel like I'm getting nowhere' like he did with the previous providers he had seen. The healing may have been slow but the progress was absolutely steady. I couldn't be more impressed!"

H.G., mom of a preteen treated for OCD/ADHD

"My therapist has a unique ability to be present with his clients, helping them process in a healthy manner. It was a privilege to have my therapist guide me and help me get to where I am today."

Y.F.

"We had tried other therapists before Aspire and never felt like we were really getting anywhere. The difference here was that the therapist actually understood ADHD — not just from a textbook."

Frequently Asked Questions

No. We conduct our own comprehensive evaluation as part of the intake process. You don’t need an outside diagnosis to get started — bring what you have and we’ll take it from there.

No — and in many cases therapy alone is highly effective. Research consistently shows that behavioral therapy and skills-based interventions produce meaningful, lasting results. When medication may also be helpful, we collaborate with local psychiatrists and can help coordinate care. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a combined approach for most children.

We work with children ages 8 and up through adolescence. Each age group requires a meaningfully different approach — what works for an 8-year-old is very different from what works for a teenager — and our therapists are specifically trained in these developmental differences.

Yes — with appropriate boundaries. Parents are actively involved in the treatment process, especially in the early stages. For children, a significant portion of our work is done with parents directly. You’ll never be left out of the big picture.

Yes. We offer HIPAA-secure telehealth services for clients in New York and New Jersey. Our in-person office is located in Bergen County, NJ. Many of our clients use a combination of in-person and telehealth sessions based on what works best for their schedule.

With appropriate consent, we communicate directly with teachers, school psychologists, and guidance counselors. We help the adults in your child’s school understand what’s driving the behaviors they’re seeing — and offer practical guidance on classroom strategies and supports that can make a real difference day to day. This kind of school-home coordination is something most private practices simply don’t offer.
