Separation Anxiety Isn't Just Clinginess. It's Real, Diagnosable Anxiety.
Separation anxiety disorder is one of the most common anxiety disorders in childhood, and it shows up in more than just tears at drop-off. It moves through emotions, behavior, and the body.
Maybe you’re not even sure it’s anxiety. Maybe it looks more like anger, or laziness, or attitude. Maybe their pediatrician said to wait and see. Maybe your child insists they’re fine while you watch them disappear.
You are not overreacting. What you’re seeing is real. And the fact that you’re looking for help, even before you’re certain, is exactly the right instinct.
We work with families in Bergen County and across New York and New Jersey who are exactly where you are right now. We know what childhood and adolescent anxiety actually looks like, including all the ways it doesn’t look like the textbooks. And we know how to help your child find their way back.
"They used to love soccer. Now they won't even leave the couch."
Loss of interest in activities they once loved is one of the hallmark signs of anxiety in youth, and it's often the first thing parents notice.
"My teen isn't sad, they're angry all the time. Is that still depression?"
Yes. In children and adolescents, irritability often accompanies depression or anxiety and may be more prominent than sadness, making it easy to mistake for "attitude" or behavioral problems.
"Their grades have tanked. The school says they're 'checked out."
Anxiety directly impairs concentration, motivation, and energy. Academic decline is often the first external signal that something deeper is going on.
"I keep hoping it'll pass. But it's been months."
Without treatment, this can persist into adulthood 36% of the time.

Negative Self-Talk
They say they're worthless or that everyone hates them.
- Important: In children, separation anxiety doesn't always look like obvious fear of being apart from a parent. It often shows up as stomachaches before school, meltdowns at drop-off that seem to come out of nowhere, trouble falling asleep without a parent nearby, or repeated reassurance-seeking throughout the day. If this has been going on for two or more weeks and is affecting your child's day-to-day life, that's your signal to reach out.

What Happens When It's Left Unaddressed
Your Child’s Confidence
Avoiding separation repeatedly teaches a child’s brain that separation is actually dangerous, reinforcing the fear rather than resolving it.
School
Separation anxiety is linked to a meaningful share of school refusal cases, and missed school compounds academically and socially over time.
Family Routines
Mornings, drop-offs, and even simple plans start revolving around managing the anxiety, which is exhausting for the whole family.
Long-Term Risk
Left untreated, separation anxiety in childhood is associated with a real risk of persisting into adolescence and adulthood, and with higher rates of other anxiety and mood difficulties later on.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) CBT helps children identify anxious thoughts, build coping skills, and gradually face separation in manageable steps. It remains one of the most well-supported treatments for childhood anxiety. Gold standard for childhood anxiety
- Targets the thought patterns that maintain anxiety
- Teaches practical, evidence-based coping skills
- Includes behavioral activation: getting kids doing what matters again
- Involves parents in developmentally appropriate ways
- The most rigorously studied treatment for pediatric anxiety
SPACE(Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
An entirely parent-based treatment, no direct child-therapist contact required, that reduces the family accommodation patterns that unintentionally maintain anxiety. A randomized trial found SPACE noninferior to individual CBT.
Parent & Family Involvement in Treatment
Research is clear: involving parents and caregivers improves treatment outcomes for youth anxiety. You are not a bystander in your child’s recovery. In most cases, you are their most powerful resource.
We build parent involvement into treatment in developmentally appropriate ways: more intensive for younger children, carefully balanced for teens who need some autonomy. You will never be left on the sidelines without guidance.
Play Therapy (for younger children)
For younger kids who can’t yet fully articulate their anxiety, play-based approaches help process fear and build coping skills in a developmentally appropriate way. Developmentally appropriate for younger children
School Collaboration & Reintegration Planning
When separation anxiety is affecting school attendance, our team can help coordinate a structured, gradual return plan with teachers and school counselors. Coordinated support beyond the therapy room

Why It Doesn't Just Go Away
Separation Anxiety Is Different From a Rough Week. Here’s Why
Every child has hard mornings. Separation anxiety is different because it’s persistent, it escalates rather than resolving on its own, and it often gets reinforced without anyone meaning for that to happen. When a parent stays a little longer to calm a child down, or a child is allowed to skip an event to avoid the distress, it brings short-term relief and long-term reinforcement. The anxiety learns that avoidance works.
This is exactly what the SPACE model is built to address: not by forcing separation before a child is ready, but by helping parents respond in ways that build the child’s own capacity to tolerate the anxiety, rather than accommodations that inadvertently keep it going.
What Families Say
Real parents.
Real outcomes.
From our testimonials page and Google reviews.
“My son knew how much our therapist really truly cared and that made him look forward to going each week. When progress was noted, there was genuine excitement. With each step forward, the question became: "What else do we need to address in order to reach our goals?" I had never seen that by any of the previous providers we had tried.“
Mother of a child treated for OCD
“Had I not given my son the gift of quality therapy, I fear this school year would have again been unsuccessful, which would have had a snowballing effect. When a child is unsuccessful in school it impacts their overall emotional health, self-esteem, self-image. A child who isn't happy with themselves isn't happy at home either, which affects everyone around them.“
Mother of an 8-year-old treated for anxiety
"My son never told me "I feel like I'm getting nowhere" like he did with previous providers. The healing may have been slow but the progress was absolutely steady. Our therapist suggested fewer sessions until he phased us out, he just wants you out of therapy as quickly as possible. I couldn't be more impressed."
